We stayed at the Gran Melia in Puerto Rico. I give this resort 2.5 out of 5 stars. When you book with Cheapcarribean.com you have no choice of air carrier, and the few flights they offer are at least one layover or possibly more. We left Chicago ORD at 7:30am, with a stopover in Philadelphia, and we didn't get to Puerto Rico until 4:00pm. It's another hour to the resort so we didn't check in until 5:30pm. I will say that booking the Dragonfly ride to and from the airport for $110.00 round trip was pricey, but probably worth it. Our driver was very personable and even pulled a "U' turn and backtracked to allow us to buy fresh fruit at a farm stand. Upon arrival we got a bit of a hard sell to join some visitor's club, and after repeatedly telling the guy no, he finally handed us our keys. We stayed in room 706 and as soon as we walked in we were overwhelmed with a musty moldy smell. We had to run the air on a constant 70 degrees to keep the moldy smell away. The problem is that the air is on an energy saving motion detector switch so every time we left the room we came back to the moldy smell. Overall the room was nice, but we noticed after day two that the cleaning lady wasn't sweeping the floor, and one of our decorative pillows had a huge stain on it. My opinion is if I can see it, so should they. A couple we met during our stay that stayed in room 1222 (I think) had water running into their room from the front door because the entryway was poured being pitched to the door instead of away from the door. I'm not talking about a little bit of water either. I'm talking about enough to get their suit cases wet, and anything else that was on the floor. They found out about it during a night of very heavy rain when he got up to go to the bathroom. This was a reoccurring problem because their door frame was visibly rotten three inches from the floor. The attention to detail was lacking a bit in instances like these. They tried several times to relocate but many of the rooms they looked at smelled of musty mold. At one point she was told by a member of the management "that smell must be in your nose" or something to that effect.
Making love on the beach at midnight under the stars is the best, and was the highlight of our trip. The rest of the resort (pool & grounds) was very nice, especially at night. The restaurants are very pricey though. Do yourself a favor and make sure you make reservations four hours + in advance of eating though. We failed to do this our first night when we ate at Passion, and they acted like they were doing us a huge favor to seat us even though we counted 9 open tables, and several of these remained open during our entire eating experience. We were also forgotten about after seated, and a couple of times throughout the evening we were contemplating just leaving because the service was so bad. It took us nearly two hours to finish our experience there and several couples/families that arrived well after us finished well before us. That was frustrating. The "wet" pool bar is the most affordable place to eat on the resort but they close at 6:00pm. Everything else is much overpriced. A one liter of water is $4.50? No thanks, I'll take my chance with the tap water which gave me no ill effects. Their water is very good in fact.
If you do the all-inclusive meal plan bring your paperwork with you because the restaurant apparently doesn't know what you paid for and will try to convince you that you agreed to receive less.
Bottom line, I don't think the price was worth it, and when we go back to Puerto Rico, we'll shop our own non-stop airfare and stay at an extended stay hotel with beach access for about one third to half the price that this place cost.
One more issue, when you go to these resorts you have to pay through the nose for transportation to go anywhere. A cab ride for two to San Juan is $162.00 round trip. Shuttle to San Juan for two is $110.00 round trip. Renting a car is expensive as well so you're stuck paying the prices they demand.
We will be going back to Puerto Rico because it seemed like a really nice place to visit. We're going to give it another try, but this time we're striking out on our own for a lot less $$$.
